The Community of Character works pro-actively to educate and encourage residents to live with good character. We do this is a number of different ways:
Our knowledge exchange workshop is exactly what EMPATHY is all about - listening to the experiences of youth to identify ways that we can make our community more accepting and welcoming to youth and encourage them to be more engaged.
Each month, you'll see a new display board in the window of the It Take's A Village store at 177 Main Street West in Listowel. The display explores the Character Trait of the month using quotes, cartoons, and pictures.
Each year, we offer a workshop to all grade 6 students in North Perth. In June 2018, Shannon Rose Scott brought yoga and meditation practices to the students and talked about how these skills can help people manage stress, anxiety and promote better mental health. Photos of the Yoga Workshop
Gotcha! When our Character Council members spot someone exhibiting the Character Trait of the month (for example, a student encouraging another student to join in a game at recess), they reward that behaviour with a "Gotcha Card". These cards can be redeemed for an ice cream cone at Dairy Queen, a cookie at Life's A Party, or a treat from Listowel Canadian Tire (thanks to our generous sponsors!). Positive reinforcement is the goal :)
Every other month, the Municipality of North Perth publishes and distributes a newsletter to keep residents informed of issues and events in the community. In each edition, you'll find a "Character Connection" column that shares the Character Traits as well as some quotes from residents about what each of the traits means to them.
The last Thursday in May is the date of the annual Character Run. In 2018, almost 400 people participated and cheered on their neighbours as we celebrated physical activity and perseverance.

We provide posters and flyers outlining ways to make Halloween more inclusive for kids with physical challenges as well as issues such as anxiety and sensitivities.
In May 2018, Ivey Business School professor Dr. Gerard Seijits spoke to the North Perth community about "Return on Character" - the research that shows that business leaders who exhibit positive character traits have more profitable businesses. See his presentation HERE.
We celebrate Character Week each year on the first full week of November. This is an opportunity for us to showcase the businesses that help support the Community of Character and also to provide some learning opportunities for people who attend the Together We're Better Spaghetti dinner that is cooked and served by local Me-to-We group students.
